CURRICULUM: 11 COURSES
 

An entry-level driver must, prior to taking the skills test, successfully complete a prescribed program of theory and behind-the-wheel instruction provided by a school or other entity listed on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry (TPR).

The Entry-Level Driver Training School Bus Endorsement Curriculum helps meet the theory instruction training requirements for CDL drivers pursuing their passenger-carrying or school bus endorsements.

11 modules are included within the Entry-Level Driver Training School Bus Endorsement Curriculum:

  • Danger Zones and Use of Mirrors is designed to help drivers become familiar with danger zones and learn techniques for keeping passengers safe as they maneuver through and around them.
  • Loading and Unloading is designed to help CDL drivers obtaining a school endorsement the specific procedures that must be used to help avoid unsafe conditions that could result in injuries or fatalities.
  • Vehicle Orientation is designed to help CDL drivers obtaining a school endorsement become oriented with common physical and operational features among most school buses—features that you must be familiar with before getting behind the wheel.
  • Post-Crash Procedures is designed to teach drivers some vital steps they need to take after a crash to help make sure that any further damage is minimized and the proper reports are filed.
  • Emergency Exit and Evacuation is designed to teach a driver’s role in safely evacuating a school bus in an emergency, whether on a bus route or an extracurricular trip.
  • Railroad-Highway Grade Crossings is designed to teach about the different types of railroad crossings, crossing gates and signs, and proper procedures for crossing railroad tracks.
  • Student Management is designed to teach drivers techniques for managing student behavior on the bus to ensure that safety is maintained, and the rights of others are respected.
  • Special Safety Considerations is designed to help drivers assess a situation, employ safe driving techniques, and prevent tail-swing crashes.
  • Pre- and Post-Trip Inspections is designed to help you learn how to conduct all required inspections to help ensure that your vehicle continues to operate safely and smoothly.
  • School Bus Security is designed to help drivers learn about potential security issues they could face as a bus driver. They will learn how to recognize potential threats; how to prevent, report, and respond to security threats; and what to do in the event of an active security event.
  • Route and Stop Reviews is designed to help drivers discuss how routes are typically established, techniques for reviewing routes and bus stops, and the importance of reporting any issues to the proper authorities.
